McDonald's French Fries - The Truth

You ever get a craving for McDonald's French fries and wonder why you crave them?  I bet you don't even think about what kind and how many ingredients are in them.  If your thinking was aligned with mine you thought the ingredients were potatoes, oil, and salt.  Sadly, there's a lot more to the McDonal'ds French fry than what I thought.
Former Mythbuster, Grant Imahara set out to discover what exactly made up the famous McDonald's French fry.  There are actually 17 ingredients in the McDonald's French fry: potatoes, canola oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor, hydrolyzed wheat, hydrolyzed milk, citric acid, dimethylpolysiloxane, dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate, salt, tbhq, and citric acid.

The fries are flash frozen before being sent to stores.  Before they can be frozen they must be dipped in dextrose for coloring and sodium acid pyrophosphate to keep the potatoes from turning grey after they are frozen.  They are partially frozen using 4 different oils: soybean, hydrogenated soybean, canola, and corn oil.  They also use a mix of potatoes: Ranger Russet, Umatilla Russet, Russet Burbank, and Shpody.  On the upside they do not use GMO potatoes to make their fries!

There are many ingredients in these fries.  Some help with color or flavor, other's preserve the potato and others preserve the oil.  TBHQ helps to preserve the oil.  Dimethylpolysiloxane is an anti-foaming agent that works to prevent the oil from splattering.

I had no idea that McDonald's fries were so allergen laden in addition to the long list of ingredients.  Their fries cannot be enjoyed by Vegetarians, Dairy-free, or Gluten-free eaters.  Do French fries really need beef extract, hydrolyzed wheat, and hydrolyzed milk?
